Other characters currently in-game: None yet!
Character Name: Haruka of Touka City (note: native commons folk in the series don't have last names and use the name of their birthplace instead)
Fandom: Pocket Monsters: Diamond & Pearl, with history from Pocket Monsters: Advanced Generation, Japanese version.
Gender: Female
Age: 10
Sexuality (if applicable): Heterosexual. She has feelings for her rival, Shuu, though she seems confused about them and usually denies them.
Original or Anomaly?: Original!
Appearance: [image] She stands at fairly average height for a ten year old, with long brown hair split to frame her face, bangs, and blue eyes. Her outfit consists of a green headband with a white monsterball symbol, black and white gloves (with just a strip of green), a short orange dress over black biking shorts, and a green fanny pack.
Personality: While Haruka's name translates to distant (probably to coincide with her father Senri's name, which is an old Japanese measure of distance), but it is reminiscent of the spring season in the same way her rival Shuu's name is taken from the Japanese name for autumn. She is confident, cheerful, friendly, kind, and always one to look on the bright side of things; in personality, she is your typical ten year old girl, naive and innocent with a child's view of the world.
Outside of the things she really cares about, she's not one to get angry. The few things that do get her angry are related to her little brother (who she adores, but is sometimes the target of her anger, as well as the source, but never in a way exceeding the usual sibling rivalry) or food. However, get between her and her food or hurt her brother (or anyone else she cares about, including her friends and Pokemon), and she will not be easy to deal with.
She is also very trusting and naive, which manifests itself in the way that the very idea that someone would do anything just to hurt someone else is beyond her understanding. A friendly smile and polite conversation is usually enough to gain her trust, though she will pick up on outwardly suspicious behaviour.
However, she's not entirely clueless, as she can be somewhat manipulative herself. In example, she used her father's wish for her to go on a Pokemon Journey (despite her disliking Pokemon) as an excuse to travel. She also loves to try new things, foods, and shopping (quite literally) until she drops.
Travelling and seeing the world was the original drive for her journey, before she discovered Pokemon Contests. But in keeping with her playful nature, she often pretended to host a TV show and address an audience as she describes the latest exploits of the Haruka Expedition Team.
Haruka's a hard worker and loves to train to come up with new performances and incorporating modified techniques into her own battling style. Outside of training for Pokemon Contests, however, she's not the most energetic of people. She can run, but she certainly won't do it for fun.
She is also very nurturing, as she acted as both sister and surrogate mother to her younger brother Masato when he travelled with her, even singing her mother's lullabye to him. Haruka also had a relationship akin to that of mother and child with the Prince of the Sea, Manaphy which she raised from an egg, even teaching it a few human phrases ("suki" love, and, inadvertently, "kamo!" convinced it was her name until the time of their parting) though she distanced herself from it because their bond was distracting it from its goal of finding the Temple of the Sea.
Out of habit, she ends many of her sentences with "kamo" (taken from kamoshirenai, which implies uncertainty and doubt), even things she is absolutely certain of (e.g., "my name is Haruka-kamo!").
History: [Bulbapedia article]
When we are first introduced to Haruka in the Advanced Generation series (the one preceding Diamond & Pearl), she is a clumsy girl with no interest in Pokemon (in fact, she dislikes them) and only wishes to begin her Pokemon journey in order to see the world and travel.
She shows her softer side when she acknowledged Satoshi and Pikachu's special bond and even began to like Pokemon, choosing an Achamo (Torchic) as her starter.
Though she was still fairly clueless at the start of her journey, not even knowing the names of her Pokemon's attacks (for instance, she thought one of Achamo's attacks was called Mushroom (pinoko) when it was actually called Ember (kinoko)).
Haruka then discovered Pokemon Contests, which focused more on displays of a Pokemon's beauty and elegance, rather than simply brute strength, and fell in love with the idea and it became her dream to one day become Top Coordinator. It was through Pokemon Contests that she met her rival Shuu, who started out handing her roses, while simultaneously belittling her, but later grew to respect her as she gained strength.
Though she did not win the Grand Festival in her home region of Houen, she tried again in the Kanto Region's Grand Festival, she only failed in the final round, which left her depressed for a period of time before Shuu reignited her fighting spirit.
After their battle, he told her of his plans to go to Jouto for the Pokemon Contests there. When she realized her other biggest rival Harley was going as well as Saori (who was the one who defeated her), she decided to break away from Satoshi's group (and her younger brother) and set out on her own journey.
When she visited Satoshi again in the Shinnou Region in DP, her Pokemon, who were mostly first stage evolutionary forms up until she left for Jouto (all save for her starter Pokemon Achamo, which had evolved to its final stage), were almost all evolved, three in their final stages, and extremely powerful.
Strengths: Determination and the will to never give up on her dream, no matter how many times she's defeated, is one of her greatest strengths. Her love for her brother, friends, and Pokemon, which prompts her to put their feelings before hers, is another.
It is because of her empathizing nature that though she might be sad or upset, she will not show it outwardly around others, but this aspect of her personality might also count more as a weakness.
Haruka also commands a pretty powerful aresnal of Pokemon.
Being on the road for so long has also made her fairly strong physically, but while she can endure quite a bit, she's still a clutz and her main form of self-defense will be using her Pokemon. However, she is shown to have much higher endurance than she did at the start of her journey (when she often collapsed, complaining about being tired or hungry) and training for Pokemon Contests have lessened her clutziness.
She can also create her very own form of Pollock (Pokeblock in the dub; a kind of Pokemon food used by Coordinators to increase certain desired traits in their Pokemon) that is colored purple, called the Haruka Delicious.
It is impossible to stomach for normal Pokemon, sending them screaming and recoiling in disgust, running around deliriously, or knocking them out after just having a single block. The only Pokemon who can handle them is Haruka's Gonbe, but considering Gonbe are the pre-evolutionary form of Kabigon (Snorlax), it's kind of a given. Just one IS enough to fill Gonbe's belly for a while.
There is a more potent Haruka Delicious 2, which is colored pink. It is unknown what it would cause to Pokemon beside her Gonbe.
If a Pokemon can't handle it, where does that leave the poor humans?
Weaknesses: As mentioned, Haruka loves food. Really, really loves food. Especially ramen. Though she usually is not one for fighting, one of the very few instances in which she fought with Satoshi was over whether to go to a dojo or a ramen stand.
Coming between Haruka and her food is just asking for trouble. She will go into a blind rage and exact vengeance on the culprit, so it's a double-edged sword.
Though she's not as easily tricked now as she was before, she is still very quick to trust and does not often doubt the honesty of others. If one approaches her with friendliness, she will trust and treat them in a friendly manner.
Her physical strength is nothing out of the ordinary for a Pokemon Trainer, so she won't hold up for long in a fight.
Her loyalty to her loved ones, be it friends or family, is also open to be taken advantage of, as she will put down everything for their safety.
She can be quite clueless about a variety of subjects (least of all food), and as she is prone to thinking outloud, she can make some dumb or obvious statements (when a boy tore off his Jiguzaguma Pokemon costume, she remarked that she didn't know humans evolved from Jiguzaguma).
And although she loves her family dearly, the subject of her father's presence (or, more accurately, lack therof) in her early childhood is one she will avoid as much as possible.
Teasing her about her relationship with her rival Shuu usually causes her to blush and fervently deny, or send her into doubt as to what her true feelings are for him. Either way, it's a good way to throw her off balance.
She's also very emotional, so while she can contain her sadness, she will eventually need an outlet for it, be it through tears or fighting, or she will break down.
Her Pokemon Gonbe is also prone to escaping its monsterball just to search for food and causing all kinds of havoc at the same time. While it can be subdued with a Haruka Delicious or Haruka Delicious 2, it usually has to be chased down first, meaning one can lure it away with food.
